The Sanctuary Guild looks after the Sanctuary, preparing it for services and cleaning up after each service.
There are about 40 members of the Guild and each one belongs to one of four teams. This means that each member is on duty every fourth week.
The teams meet on a Saturday or Friday to get the Sanctuary ready for Sunday worship. They clean and check all the brasses and silver. The High Altar is checked to see that the appropriate frontal and antependia are in
place. The fair linen, which is the white linen cloth placed on the top of the altar, is checked for cleanliness
and to see if it needs to be ironed. The silver is prepared and the appropriate linens set out. The wine and communion wafers are also checked. New flowers are arranged in the brass vases.
After the Sunday services, the silver is washed and put away, and also set up for weekday services.
Flowers are checked to see if they have enough water. The dirty linen is gathered up and taken away for washing and ironing. If any repairs are needed, they are carried out.
The Sanctuary Guild decorates the church for special seasons: Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving. Guild members make palm crosses for Palm Sunday and on Maundy Thursday assist the clergy to strip the altar and sanctuary of all ornaments.
The members of the Guild meet twice a year in the spring and fall for meetings and socializing. The spring meeting includes a pot luck supper. At each meeting, there is a service of communion, evensong, or compline.
Some of the members are also coordinators for weddings at Grace Church. Each wedding has two coordinators who make sure that the rehearsal and wedding go without a hitch. We have great fun at weddings.
New members are always welcome. If you are interested in becoming a member, contact Anne Robson at 416-762-4104.
A Guild Prayer
Gracious God, by your love for us, you created a world full of wonder and beauty; may we, by our love for you, so adorn your sanctuary that those who come to worship will be illumined by your Spirit and empowered by your love. Amen.
