"Gifts of the Spirit"
An intergenerational program at Grace Church on-the-Hill
High-quality, professionally instructed creative movement and arts classes for children, offered concurrently with meditation and parenting discussion sessions for adults.
12 Saturdays, January through June, starting at 3:30 pm. Each session is followed by a pizza dinner.
HERE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS THAT THE KIDS HAVE BEEN UP TO SINCE SEPTEMBER:
Creative movement and exploring the church space -- our shared home!
Older children create visual art projects that will contribute in various ways to the life of Grace Church community: for example, produce art that will enhance the decor of our various spaces (parish hall, chapel, etc.), or the set of our upcoming musical, "Jonah", etc.
At the same time, our younger participants listen to a story-book reading such as this:
This book was used in the session on hope/patience.
The children then act out the story through a creative movement class held in the nave, and finally, create hand puppets or other visual symbols that could be used to re-enact the story at home. The craft ativity often looks like this:
Their moms and dads (and some grandparents and older siblings!) in the meantime, participate in an adult session that includes a parenting discussion, reflection/meditation on a portion of Scripture and a non-Biblical ("real life") inspirational story, listening to live singing/music, and prayers for our families. After this, of course, everyone's hungry -- so we eat!!
- Then finally, the children get to play and run amok, and the parents socialize:
AND MUCH MORE...
WOULD YOU LIKE YOUR FAMILY TO BE INVOLVED IN SOMETHING THAT LOOKS LIKE THIS? THEN READ ON!
ü Are you looking for a place to experience "church" together as a whole family?
ü Would you like to be able to "take it home", and connect over what you have learned with your children in meaningful ways, using various tools, including those that are web-based?
ü Do you find it challenging to attend Sunday morning church services due to scheduling activities, baby naps, family life?
ü Do you simply find the format and/or length of a traditional service to be "too much" for you right now, independent of your family situation?
Are you new to church and not sure whether you're ready to join us on Sunday mornings?
Then the "Gifts of the Spirit" is a place for you, where everyone will be engaged in meaningful explorations of similar concepts -- at the same time, but at their own level. We welcome families with children of any age, and their friends (new to church or currently affiliated).
Preschoolers and Elementary (2.5 - 7 years)
Propel Dance Centre certified dance instructors will use uniquely designed curriculum, developmentally appropriate pedagogy, and body-positive language in 10 minutes of story telling using books for character education, followed by 30 minutes of creative movement re-enacting these book stories through dance and dramatization, and 20 minutes of visual art to create a memento to take home and reflect on the session
Pre-teens and early teens (8+)
An Oakville-based visual artist Kay Plante will implement her curriculum with the older children after they hear a similar story focusing on the same theme as that taught to the adults and younger children
Babies and children under the age of 2.5
will be welcomed in our well-equipped and professionally staffed nursery room
Structured but informal time of contemplation and facilitated parenting discussion, on the same theme as that which the children will be exploring (i.e., to consider "how can we teach these values in our homes? and do we understand them well enough ourselves?").
We will be learning about character traits and attributes of life that people of all backgrounds will recognize as wholesome and worthy of aspiration, but Christians specifically consider to be the gifts of God, given to us to foster and cultivate, from the time when we are still children.
We will provide the at-home resources to integrate what the adults will learn in their session with the children's learnings, both helping you to "take church home" and into your everyday, Sunday-to-Sunday life, and also to become more active participants in fostering your children's faith development.
May choose to join the adult sessions, or volunteer to help the instructors with the children's activities
